Big Mama represents more than simple illumination of space. It does light up a room, but at the same time it gives the space character and personality.  Design Bridge to Create 21st Century Pint GlassA safer British pint glass is being developed by designers in a bid to crack the problem of glasses being used in violent assaults.On behalf of the Design & Technology Alliance Against Crime, the Design Council has appointed a team of specialist designers to create a new kind of pint glass to reduce the number of injuries from the 87,000 violent incidents involving glassware each year, which costs an estimated £100 million in NHS, police and court costs annually. The appointed designers, Design Bridge, will work on producing a range of safer drinking vessel prototypes, which will be unveiled in December this year. The challenge is to not only develop a safer pint glass, but to ensure they are attractive to industry, manufacturers and consumers. Working closely with manufacturers and the drinks trade, Design Bridge will look to develop more than one solution, which could be taken up by pub and club owners. more www.des...  Contortionist Folding Bike Nominated for Design AwardDo you tear your hair out when you have to wait for the next tube because you can't fit your bike on the one that's just pulled in?Well thanks to a young designer that could be a thing of the past. Because young designer Dominic Hargreaves has created a fold-up bike which has been shortlisted for the £10,000 James Dyson Award. The 24-year-old developed the Contortionist, which folds between the circumference of its 26inch wheels and can be pulled by one of its handlebars, for commuters. Once folded the bike cannot fold back on its self while riding and the wheels rotate when folded up so the folded package can be wheeled along rather having to be carried. more road.cc...
