6th Materialica Design and Technology Award 2008

6th Materialica Design and Technology Award 2008

The application period for the 6th Materialica Design + Technology Award has begun.

The annual award, which has been held since 2003, seeks to outline the importance of materials for industrial design-oriented applications and to encourage a dialog between material manufacturers, designers and product manufacturers.

The award will be granted by MunichExpo Veranstaltungs GmbH, the organizers of Materialica, the international specialist trade fair for material applications, surfaces and product engineering.

The award ceremony will take place on the occasion of the 11th Materialica on October 14, 2008.

All awarded submissions will be presented at the Materialica Design Show in a separate exhibition architecture designed exclusively for this event.

In addition to the categories material, surface and product, MunichExpo will, for the first time, grant a special award for CO2 efficiency.

The award will be granted on the basis of amounts of carbon dioxide produced during manufacturing, service life and for the disposal of material, products and technologies.

Application deadline: June 30, 2008.

Nissan Environmental Technologies on Display at Science Museum London

Nissan Environmental Technologies on Display at Science Museum, London

A scale model of Nissan's highly distinctive Pivo electric concept and several other of the company's environmental technologies are showcased at the "The Science of Survival" exhibition which opened Saturday April 5 at the prestigious Science Museum in London.

The thought-provoking and interactive exhibition explores how our lives could be affected by environmental changes and resource availability by 2050.

The exhibition was developed in consultation with scientists and researchers and is co-sponsored by Nissan.

Throughout the exhibition, innovative objects gathered from around the world and fun, hands-on games and design activities enable visitors to explore how science and technology could be used to help us live more sustainably.

The quarter scale Pivo will be on display in the "Moving" area of the exhibition where visitors can discover new vehicle fuels for the future including electricity, hydrogen and biofuels made from plants.

The zero-emission concept, which features a fully rotating cabin eliminating the need to reverse, was first unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2005.

Also on display in the same area - Nissan's compact laminated Lithium-ion Battery for electric vehicles, its Super Motor and part of a resin outer body panel.

DeSForM 2008

DeSForM 2008

On November 6 & 7 the next DeSForM workshop will take place at the Hochschule fur Gestaltung Offenbach am Main/Germany.

The actual debate about Design & Research shows that there is a need for more and detailed knowledge about the disciplinary aspects of Design.

Inter-, trans- and even multidisciplinary discourses are necessary, because today Design is at the same eye level as other scientific disciplines.

But Design today has its own objects, goals and methods.

Product Semantics and Product Language are fundamental for Design as a discipline.

The HfG Offenbach, as an important centre of product language, is looking forward to hosting the next DeSForM workshop.

Since the 1970's knowledge about Design has been developed continuously - the "Theory of Product Language" is widely recognized as an important disciplinary kernel of Product Design and Design Research.

For the 2008 workshop at the HfG Offenbach researchers and practioners are particularly welcome.

Tectonic Side and Sofa Tables Designed by Alain Gilles for Bonaldo

Tectonic Side and Sofa Tables: Designed by Alain Gilles for Bonaldo

The Tectonic table series is based on the idea of movement within the construction of its shape but also the ability to create unexpected freeform geometry by shifting and juxtaposing several small tables one next to the other.

Hence, these tables are a combination between a plastic and a graphic approach.

The concept comes from the will to create pieces of furniture that are non-static, but also to give the end user the possibility to created their own story and, in a way, their own design when playing with several pieces.

The tables are either very graphic when treated as wire frame structures and more straight forward when used with a plain top.

It is obvious that one can also play with the notion of opened and closed spaces by mixing them all together.

When presented as a wire frame, while looking from above, one can also clearly read in the movement the shape of a rose.
