Sony Ericsson K500 S710a and Z500i

Sony Ericsson K500, S710a, and Z500i

Sony Ericsson today launched three new mobile phone handsets, including among them EDGE support for faster data access, 3D game support, digital cameras, and other features.

The first of the new phones is the K500. Measuring 102 x 46 x 14 mm and weighing 80 grams, the K500 is targeted at multimedia users. The candybar-designed phone sports a 128 x 160 pixel 16-bit color TFT display specifically intended for gaming, which is backed up by 12 MB of RAM for users to install either 2D or 3D Java-based games. The battery is rated for up to 8 hours of talk time or 300 hours standby.

Naturally the phone includes a camera as well. The camera is activated by opening a lens shutter, rare for modern camera phones that typically leave the lens unprotected. The K500 is capable of taking both still images and video clips, both of which can then be sent to other users over MMS. Naturally the phone includes SMS and EMS support as well.

Personalization is a high feature of the K500, and the phone is fully themeable with wallpapers and polyphonic ring tones. The phone even includes an MP3 player, although with only 12 MB of memory it won't hold a great deal of music.

The K500 will come in five versions for different markets and through different carriers. All five are tri-band GSM/GPRS running 900/1800/1900 MHz. The K500c, K506c, and

Sony Ericsson Announced The P910 Smartphone Design

Sony Ericsson Announced The P910 Smartphone Design

Sony Ericsson today released their new communicator device, the widely anticipated P910. As we saw when an internal Power Point presentation got leaked some months ago, the P910 makes use of the same basic design as used by the P900, but incorporates a full QWERTY thumb board into the underside of the keypad flip.

Most specs of the P910 remain the same as those of the P900, but there are a handful of noteworthy exceptions. For one, the internal memory was bumped up from 16MB to 64MB. Also in the memory/storage department, the P910 will ship with a 32MB memory card instead of the 16MB unit shipped with the P900. What is likely to please a lot of P900 users is the fact that the new P910 will support the Memory Stick Duo Pro format, which can reach capacities of up to 1GB in size, a far cry better than the 128MB limit imposed on the P900.

Other changes include an upgrade in the display. The new display is capable of displaying 262k colors. And unlike the P900, there will be a version of the P910 for the Americas markets called the P910a that, while still triband, supports the 850/1800/1900Mhz bands instead of the normal 900/1800/1900Mhz bands. The P910c for the Chinese market will support 900/1800/1900Mhz, as will the P910i that is meant for all remaining markets not covered by the other two.

Sadly, some things stayed the same that we would have liked to have seen upgraded. The major one being the P910's still VGA resolution camera. The rest of the hardware specs look much like they were copied from the P900's design, which is no surprise.

ID August 2004 Annual Design Review 2004

I.D. August 2004: Annual Design Review 2004

Two thousand pieces cascaded into the 2004 competition (including the Student Design Review, which will be published in September/October) . Some of the country's most distinguished designers and critics were stuffed, three by three, into a conference room and tossed a few sweet rolls until they had winnowed a final selection. The jurors were demanding-some might even say pathologically picky. But Adam Tihany, who helped judge the furniture category, articulated his colleagues' high standards when he stated that "an I.D. award sticker...should be so prestigious that it's like being in a museum collection." Find out who won!
