Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec

Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec

MOCA presents the first North American museum exhibition to focus on the work of Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, the young French designers who have received international recognition for their bracingly modern furniture, products, and interior designs. Documenting many of their designs in a dynamic site-specific installation, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec opens at The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) at the Pacific Design Center (8687 Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood) on June 27, 2004, and will remain on view through October 18, 2004.

Organized by MOCA Assistant Curator Michael Darling, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec features over 20 works from 1997 to the present. Designing a range of products including furniture, shelving units, oversized lamps, ceramics, dinnerware, and home accessories, the Bouroullec brothers' work possesses an evocative essence that reflects familiar associations while still remaining open to interpretation.

The Bouroullecs' design approach involves a vigorous exchange of ideas where strong opinions, complementary training (Ronan in design, Erwan in art), and filial directness yield products devoid of extraneous detail and refreshingly pure in execution. Challenging the limitations and boundaries of traditional design, they work to create products that are functional for everyday use yet are aesthetically beautiful. Each time they begin their process, the pair sets goals to create new designs that are daring and fresh.

ID June 2004 The Water Issue

I.D. June 2004: The Water Issue

The subject of water is as mundane as a puddle and as profound as the Marianas Trench. Try to grasp it and it slips through your fingers. Yet given the vitality of this element to design, we found the attempt irresistible. Here, I.D. offers a cupped handful of projects related to water in all its states: vast three-dimensional models of waterways that predict how oceans and rivers will behave; an initiative to bring clean water to parched countries through systems developed to sustain life in outer space; an art installation near the Arctic Circle made precarious by the fickle nature of snow and ice; research into a shrimp species designed much like a Corbusier building; and more.

Innovation Begins at Home

Innovation Begins at Home

British businessman fed up with the wheelchairs his daughter was forced to use hired two industrial designers to help him develop a better pediatric wheelchair.

A man whose company specialises in aircraft technology has just launched a 'designer' wheelchair that was originally made for his daughter.

Richard Smith was so frustrated by the lack of suitable wheelchairs that he decided that he could do a better job himself.

"A lot of companies aren't prepared to put in much production investment, but I also think there's a lack of imagination," Mr Smith told BBC News Online.

Mr Smith, from Leominster, Herefordshire, hired two graduates in industrial design and worked with them to produce the Chunc.

"I started working on this three years ago, when Sophie, who was then 12, started to have to use a much bigger wheelchair.

"And I frankly found the products that she was using too heavy, too cumbersome, not really fit for the purpose and quite stigmatising as well."

The Chunc is on show at Naidex 2004 - an exhibition of products for disabled people - at the NEC in Birmingham.
The HR Smith Group has come up with a wheelchair that uses bold colours and lightweight composite materials resulting in something that has a similar appeal to a Swatch, a Smart Car or a Dyson vacuum cleaner.
