 (H.G. Esch)
This is how the influential German magazine Die Zeit described the Gläserne Manufaktur ('Glazed Factory'), an ultramodern facility that opened in Dresden's city park in early 2002. The English newspaper The Guardian called the building a cross between a factory and an art gallery. The Gläserne Manufaktur is the plant that produces the VW Phaeton. A fan of the Volkswagen showpiece with between 50,000 and 100,000 euros to spare can park a Phaeton in the family garage. Long known for making cars for ordinary folks, the Wolfsburg-based corporation is establishing a 'new standard in car production' in the hope of generating enthusiasm for the brand among the members of a more affluent target group.
Picking up a new car at the factory has been an option for some time, but

The windswept campus of the Rochester Institute of Technology might seem an unlikely spot for a lineup of design heavy hitters, but the Thought at Work Conference delivered on an ambitious quest to provide student designers with insights from the professional design community. The conference, a reaction to last year's Northeast IDSA conference, was conceived of and organized by three R.I.T. Students--Don Lehman, Ori Fowler, and Sam Aquillano--who dared to rifle through magazines, call up designers who impressed them, and simply ask them to come.
With a crack team of volunteers, support from the faculty and, heart-warmingly, students' parents(!), the conference ran like clockwork, provided inspiring presentations and dialogue, and startlingly, served as a template for how to put on a

Rowena Reed Kostellow Fund and Pratt Institute invite educators and professional designers to a week-long summer.
workshop: July 31 to August 7, 2004.
This workshop attempts to condense into a week the rudimentary abstraction exercises developed in the Pratt Industrial Design program 50 years ago.
This concentrated studio workshop is designed for designers and alumni looking to turbocharge their formgiving talents, teachers looking for techniques and teaching tips, and students wanting to feel the third dimension. The series of exercises developed at Pratt have become the foundation of many industrial design education programs, and the method of analysis also applies to architecture, graphic design, and art.
Normally the series takes 3 to 4 years from the manipulation of simple f

This Year's IDSA National Conference heads to the left coast.
Californians really know how to have a good time. How else could you describe a population that elected a governor whose best qualification for the position was that he flew a Harrier jet in "True Lies?" Ba-da-boom! Thank you, thank you. You've been a great audience. If you enjoyed the show, don't forget to check out the 2004 IDSA National Conference Oct. 27-30 in sunny Pasadena, CA; where movie stars can be politicians, every idea is worth at least $400 million to a production studio and, for a good Martini, you need only wait with your beautifully designed shaker for the next earthquake.
For those of you who have never visited the left coast, there's plenty to do. First, however, some travel tips. Flying into the B
