It is said of him that he designed everything: from lip-gloss to locomotives. But in Japan Raymond Loewy is best known for the cigarette packet 'Peace', launched onto the market in 1952. Eighteen years after his death, the Tobacco & Salt Museum in Shibuya pays homage to his design genius and ideal of simplicity ("The main goal is not to complicate the already difficult life of the consumer" he often said), illustrating the long career of the father of industrial design.
The Pioneer of Modern Design from 3/13/04 through 5/16/04. Well known in Japan as the designer for Peace Cigarettes, Fujiya candy and Studebaker automobiles, Loewy enormously influenced and contributed to the development of post-war Japan's industrial design movement.
Eighteen years after his death, many of his works still retain their attraction for contemporary consumers and are cherished by them. The exhibition introduces Loewy's work to a new generation of Japanese consumers, the classic designs that continue to influence many modern Japanese designers today.

 Designmai 2004
Brauereigelände Pfefferberg, Schönhauser Allee 176, Berlin
T +49-30-27572498
The second edition of the Berlin design week takes on a demanding theme this year: explaining how the architectural landscape in Eastern European countries changes with their official entry into the European Union.
Who would have expected such a great and positive response to our first ever DESIGNMAI in 2003? And who would have expected a repeat event only the following year? Between 6th - 16th of May 2004 Berlin will again attract design aficionados from all over the world with a huge variety of design events. This year, there will be more than 130 exhibitions, discussions, talks and other events - organised by the individual participants and DESIGNMAI's founding organisation Transform-Berlin e.V.
The sum of all DESIGNMAI events provides a vibrant overview of contemporary design: from international trends to the microcosm of Berlin's current design scene. In this, the festival's inimitable profile rests on precisely these small contributions which highlight the cultural aspect of design, consistently refuting the cliché of superficiality and always testing and redefining the boundaries of what design stands for. By offering a glimpse behind the scenes of creative Berlin, DE

Promoted by Dyson and supported by the ADI, the "Dyson Design Award" invites young designers and design students to tackle the theme of "innovation in everyday objects and services for leisure time. The designs should be for products that can be industrialised relating to living (including those for the bathroom, kitchen, basement or garden) and individual transport." A € 4,000 prize is reserved for the professional category, and a week-long trip to the UK is offered to the students. The winners will also be put forward for the "Global Dyson Design Award," an international competition bringing together winners of all the local editions. L.B.

 From Domus Magazine.
Judging by the result - elegant and simple - you wouldn't think that they took four years of work. A close collaboration between Karim Rashid, eclectic designer of sofas, objects, rugs, lamps and innovative cosmetics packaging, together with Swiss jewellers Golay, specialists in the pearl business, both natural and cultivated.
"An almost symbiotic relationship where I was able to confront myself with a totally different culture and world from my own". This is how the American designer describes his first experience in the world of jewellery. "In reality I have always wanted to design jewellery, for the freedom it allows you and how you can express yourself as an artist and not just as a designer". Three shapes that repeated and combined, form the basis of a highly precious collection of rings, necklaces and bracelets.
The designer's intention is to emphasise the beauty of the pearls that seem to be still in the oyster shell. "It's a seed in preparation", explains Rashid: "I'm designing a headdress completely covered in pearls that come down to the face". A unique object that only a few will be able to afford. Prices for the collection? From 1,200 to 35,000. E.S.

Joris Laarman, together wih Anita Star, picks the most interesting projects from Salone del Mobile 2004 for Domus. Photography by Pino Guidolotti.
Thursday April 15th, 11am
The day starts with us meeting Pino Guidolotti, a classic Italian photographer with wild hair that's starting to grey. Because our French and Italian are just as poor as Pino's English we immediately understand that our hands or the design should do the talking today. The weather is nice and Milan is beautiful although most people we speak to say Milan's cultural life has been dead since the economic crisis. This crisis is tangible as we find later walking through the fair. The big companies don't do risky or inspiring products, which makes the overall impression rather flat. But also the art related conceptual players like Droog Design take it 'slow'. Nevertheless we feel some new promising energy on the horizon. Together with Pino we walk through the big fair building. It looks like sheiks from the Middle East do their furniture shopping here. All the stands are filled with white leather sofas done in zebra prints and decorative knobs. Somehow it fascinates us. Pino starts taking pictures. This is design and it sells in big numbers. We start at the Salone Satellite near the Fiera building. These big fa
