Combined functions. Multiple uses. Fluid modular design, reworking the concept of repetition. Unusual groupings of materials and colors. Changing perspectives. The approach to furniture becomes more personal and interactive, thanks to designs that can be assembled and disassembled to meet different needs, practically becoming one-of-a-kind pieces.

Art Center College of Design hosted the first of a biennial conference series at the school's new south campus last month, with an all-star lineup and an enthusiastic crowd. The event's theme, "Stories from the Source: Design Excursions Out of the Ordinary," sought to capture design as the essential medium in which stories are told. Tales of failure, innovation, social change, past inspiration and future vision were all elements in the storytelling. The conference served as the inaugural event for the college's new facility. Originally opened as the Southern California Cooperative Wind Tunnel-a joint venture of five aerospace companies-the 19,000 square foot facility served as a dramatic backdrop for the new South Campus.
Below is a roundup of some of the presentations-not fully comprehensive, but conferences are intense and unrelenting, and we had to take the occassional break!
Conference Program Chair Chee Pearlman sought to position the conference with a coherent theme of exploration and understanding. She tied together loose ends, talking about seemingly simple things such as innovation in the shopping bag (paper producers feeling threatened by plastic bag manufacturers; the introduction of the paper shopping bag with handles), and the oft-cited invention of 3M's

Frank O Gehry has designed the Superlight chair in anodised aluminium for Emeco, the company with which he worked with last year. The chair is characterized by a horizontal pivot movement to improve the comfort of the chair. In a video on show at pavilion 20 filmed in the workshop in which the prototype was tried out with the artisans, Gehry explains the concept behind this piece.
The dimensions of the chair are 42cm wide by 52 deep, height 81cm, seat height 46cm.
The Emeco chairs are in 80% recycled aluminium which means that the energy consumed to produce them is at least seventeen times less than when new aluminium is used. They are made completely by hand, welded by MIG (Material Electrode Inert Gas Method), after which the chair results as a single piece without mechanical connections. Afterwards they are subjected to a heat treatment at 520°C that hardens them to give structural tension to the metal, followed by cooling and aging processes, the sandblasting that creates the satin finish and finally an anti-oxidisation for 30 minutes for the final protection.
Emeco products are known for their lightness, robustness, water resistance and durability.
The Emeco Aluminium Chair Company was set up in 1944 to produces for the US Marines chairs for ship

The future of design is interactive maintain the students at the Ivrea school. Judging by the designs on show at the Triennale, they could be right. Amongst the more poetic of these was a device for writing e-mails by Aparna Rao. An old "Lettera 22" that adequately instructed can write emails and has been chosen by Olivetti for its museum.
On show also interactive wall paper that when touched can communicate with domestic appliances in the home, an inflatable cavern in which to leave your audio-graffiti, a new generation of interactive tables for breakfast and an old cinquecento that runs on mp3 files.

Three functions: sofa, bed and flexible light source. What is more, the sofa designed by Stefano Giovannoni with Rodrigo Torres for Domodinamica has a friendly appearance of a comical alien.
'Morfeo' is a two seater sofa, the polyurethane structure hides a folding metal bed base and mattress. The jointed lamps at each end of the back can be adjusted for reading or pointed towards the ceiling to light the surroundings.
