 Amelia Cunard and Jon Santiago: Duo Re-Fabs Waste to FurnitureTwo New Yorkers are scouting the South Bronx for a place to start up an innovative company that will turn discarded wood and construction materials into furniture for sale."We're taking advantage of the fact that there is a lot of usable and predictable waste in New York City and the tristate area," said Jon Santiago.  Electrolux Wins Australian Award for Sustainable DesignThe Electrolux 2008 refrigeration collection in Australia has won the 2009 Award for Excellence in Sustainable Design in Standards Australia's International Design Awards.John Gertsakis, Senior Sustainability Consultant at WSP Environmental and one of this year's judges, said the Electrolux refrigeration collection was a standout example of a product addressing a range of environmental issues through design. "The collection demonstrates a sophisticated approach to design for sustainability. It shows how you can successfully combine good design with environmental performance and how design can effectively address functionality, aesthetic quality and affordability in a product that potentially has a significant environmental impact," he said. The judges were also impressed by the Electrolux commitment to product stewardship with a take-back service for previously owned fridges, product packaging recycling and product life expectancy of 20 years or more. Stephanie Watson, Program Director of the Australian International Design Awards, said: "With up to 80% of a product's environmental impact locked in at the design stage, designers are in a strong position to encourage environmentally responsible actions.  Chrysler Brands Get Their Own Design Chiefs Under Fiat-Led RestructuringReflecting the design and branding organisation of its Italian partner Fiat, Chrysler has given each of its three brands - Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep - their own design bosses, reporting to Senior Vice President of Product Design, Ralph Gilles.The new design heads are Brandon Faurote at Chrysler, Joseph Dehner at Dodge, and Mark Allen for Jeep. Brandon Faurote, the youngest of the trio at 37, was previously Vice President of advance design for international models, with the Dodge Neon, Chrysler PT Cruiser and the 1999 Jeep Cherokee in his folio. Joseph Dehner, 44, has previously worked as Vice President of Production for cars, minivans, trucks and Jeep design, with the Crossfire and Sebring figuring among his works.
