Label Design as a Driver of User-centred Innovation

Design as a Driver of User-centred Innovation

The Commission Staff Working Document on "Design as a driver of user-centred innovation" analyses the contribution of design to innovation and competitiveness.

The results are compelling: companies that invest in design tend to be more innovative, more profitable and grow faster than those who do not.

At a macro-economic level, there is a strong positive correlation between the use of design and national competitiveness.

Although often associated with aesthetics and the "looks" of products only, the application of design is in reality much broader.

User needs, aspirations and abilities are the starting point and focus of design activities.

With a potential to integrate for example environmental, safety and accessibility considerations - in addition to economic - into products, services and systems, design is an area which deserves public attention.

Design as a driver and enabler of innovation complements more traditional innovation activities such as research.

In the current economic climate, where resources for innovation are scarce, design and other non-technological innovation drivers, such as organisational development, employee-involvement and branding, become particularly relevant.

They often are less capital intensive and have shorter pay-back periods than for example technological research, but still have the potential to drive competitiveness.

What is luxury today? Design Forum Finland's summer exhibition studies modern varieties and phenomena of luxury.

"Luxury" has traditionally referred to opulence, abundance and rare expensive products and designer brands.

Today's luxury products emphasize above all good design and their focus is shifting from the objects as such to their different, and even surprising, contexts.

The concept of luxury has become enmeshed in our everyday lives, while at the same time it is continuously changing.

Luxury is being associated more and more with personal choices and traditional, time-consuming skills of the hand and natural, ecological materials but also with new technological applications.

Information on the designer and maker, and the working process, makes products unique and desirable.

LUKSUS 09, Design Forum's summer exhibition, suggests various perspectives on luxury, through fascinating pairs of oppositions such as Minna Parikka's satin-ribbon shoes in which the element of luxury is the wearer's preparation for a special occasion or Aki Choklat's new and laid-back interpretation of traditional felt footwear.

Creating the Perfect Design Brief

Creating the Perfect Design Brief

A design brief, also often called a creative brief, is the most essential ingredient for any major design project.

However, it is often one of the least understood documents among the various stakeholders involved in a design project.

A well-crafted brief can actually shorten the time it takes to execute the design process, and also make the process of having a design solution approved much easier.

Instructor Peter L. Phillips will share his extensive knowledge and experience with this subject in a highly interactive seminar.

Attendees will receive a copy of Peter's book, Creating the Perfect Design Brief, the first (and to date only) comprehensive body of knowledge on the subject.
