An early invention by Albert Einstein has been rebuilt by scientists at Oxford University who are trying to develop an environmentally friendly refrigerator that runs without electricity.
Malcolm McCulloch, an electrical engineer at Oxford who works on green technologies, is leading a three-year project to develop more robust appliances that can be used in places without electricity.
His team has completed a prototype of a type of fridge patented in 1930 by Einstein and his colleague, the Hungarian physicist Leo Szilard.
It had no moving parts and used only pressurized gases to keep things cold.
The design was partly used in the first domestic refrigerators, but the technology was abandoned when more efficient compressors became popular in the 1950s.

The UK's first across-the-board campaign to raise professional standards of practising designers and galvanise primary, secondary, further and higher education to produce the next generation of world-class designers, will be launched on 22 September by Culture Secretary Andy Burnham.
Mr Burnham will emphasise the importance of the campaign and will point out that sponsoring better design practice is not only good for design, but it is even better for business, society and the whole economy.
The campaign, called "Good Design Practice", was developed by the newly-formed UK Design Skills Alliance to galvanise the design industry, education and government, and includes a range of initiatives to help designers stay at the forefront of their field.
The Good Design Practice campaign also covers measures for further and higher education as well as secondary and primary schools.
These include a Design Mark for schools - an aspirational badge recognising excellence in design teaching and learning.
