Surface Tensions: Surface, Finish and the Meanings of Objects

The physical surfaces of objects are the result of complex and subtle finishing processes, they require assiduous maintenance, and function as a register of duration and experience.

How might the investigation of surface and finish provoke innovative thinking, in history, theory and practice, across the creative arts and material culture?

The Surface Tensions research network is holding an agenda-setting round-table symposium.

Speakers from material culture, design history, textiles, conservation, and creative practice will open up a range of themes in the study of surface and finish.

Airmail Bringing Lightness to Everyday Objects

Airmail: Bringing Lightness to Everyday Objects

Airmail is an exhibition with new objects dealing with the idea of weight, or rather the absence of it, in design.

Lightness has been often used to measure progress in society (e.g. aircrafts or architectural structures.), and its relation with mobility is as old as mankind.

A relation that recently is leading to mobile devices where the convergence of functions suggest that we could, one day, have function without matter.

Probably as a reaction to that, there is being an increase in the production of heavily crafted objects and the revival of pattern and decoration.

Between this progress-based idea of doing more with less, and the heavily handcrafted pieces "Airmail" finds its place.

"Airmail" features experiments, interpretations, and developments on the idea of lightness in its broader meaning.

Brian Vogel Hired as IDSA Interim Executive Director

Brian Vogel Hired as IDSA Interim Executive Director

The Industrial Designers Society of America announced the hiring of Brian Vogel, IDSA as interim executive director.

Vogel is an experienced leader and consultant in product development and innovation, but was hired for his particular expertise in the business of design, and management.

He also brings experience as an active member of IDSA.

In particular, Vogel has served as a past member of the board of directors as executive vice president from 2001-2002, started the Design Management Section, authored a Corporate Study, served as guest editor of Innovation magazine twice, and led past IDSA strategic planning efforts.

He has enjoyed, and still enjoys, a long and illustrious career.

In 2006 he started his own practice to provide business and operations coaching to owners of design firms and heads of corporate design offices, including many IDSA members.

Current Society President Eric Anderson, IDSA, lauded Vogel's appointment as interim executive director by saying, "IDSA is fortunate to have someone as knowledgeable and passionate about the business of industrial design take the reigns of this great organization at such an important time.

Many have expressed that Vogel's steady hand and intelligent vision will continue to move us forward in meaningful ways as we search for a permanent executive director."

The British Promotional Merchandise Association and leading worldwide innovator 3M have teamed up to launch the first promotional gift student design award.

The competition is specifically targeted towards product design students in the UK.

The UK promotional merchandise market is valued at in excess of £1.2bn and has seen an array of innovative products over the years, some appearing on Dragons Den.

"The industry constantly needs new and innovative ideas and we felt that by stimulating the UK's young student designers was a great place to start," commented Gordon Glenister, Director General of the bpma.

The competition closes on the 31st July 2009.

The winner will receive £2500 in cash along with an opportunity to take the winning design to prototype stage and possible manufacture.

All the short listed finalists will be invited to 3M's innovation centre in Bracknell to present their designs.

Are We Misinterpreting the Innovation Agenda

Are We Misinterpreting the Innovation Agenda?

The rise of competitive activity between universities on the one hand and private sector design and innovation firms on the other was highlighted in Delivering the Innovation Dream: The BDI Report, which was delivered to the Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) in March.

It outlines how a significant number of public sector-funded university innovation centres are marketing their services to small businesses as industry-standard design suppliers, to the detriment of commercial design companies - and how this has created a disruptive market which risks delivering self-inflicted wounds to both sectors.

The response has been immediate, varied and revelatory.

Where respondents' experiences reflected those included in the report, feedback has been wholly supportive.

Others, however, felt aggrieved at the issues raised - particularly those universities who feel they have a strong role to play and are merely responding to government pressure to commercialise research results.

BDI members agree that universities have a crucial role to play in the innovation space (as its report illustrated when citing a number of successful case studies), and that a beneficial partnership exists between science and technology research-based universities and well-established, highly-experienced design and innovation firms creating market applications.
