Designboom NY Local

As a city that is rich with diverse juxtapositions of contrasts, New York's design culture has evolved into an eclecticism of visual languages which directly reflect the dynamic mix of its own icons, contextual references and urban creativity.

NY local is an exhibition curated by designboom and presents the work of some of the big apple's best transplants, expats, design veterans and rising stars.

NY local is part of the off-site event program in the meatpacking district.

New Hungarian Designers at New York Design Week

New Hungarian Designers at New York Design Week

In conjunction with New York Design Week, the Hungarian Cultural Center will present a capsule show of emerging Hungarian designers at its Soho loft space from May 16 - 19.

Titled "Soft Is the New Cool," the three-day exhibition will feature 15 emerging Hungarian designers and their works, which all explore the theme of "softness"-as applied to graphic, furniture, jewelry and architecture design.

Participants include Kitchen Budapest, a new media lab researching online communities and urban space; Geppetto, an experimental group of designers who exhibited at Satellite Milan; Noemie Gera, who creates metal jewelry inspired by organic shapes; and Szofita, a young artist who combines jewelry design, graphic design and animation.

The mini-fair is curated by WAMP, a Budapest-based design organization.

"Soft Is the New Cool" is part of Extremely Hungary, a yearlong festival celebrating contemporary Hungarian arts and culture.

Weld Hand-crafted Plastic Furniture by Phil Cuttance

Weld: Hand-crafted Plastic Furniture by Phil Cuttance

The handcrafted Weld series utilises hot-air plastic welding, a process commonly used to repair broken plastic parts.

In the Weld collection, this process is used to join thin plastic components together to create furniture featuring strong and decorative edges.

A departure from machine-made mass replicated plastic furniture, Weld's limited edition pieces are each individually hand-crafted, idiosyncratic and therefore possess an inherent value unusual for plastic furniture.

The series consists of a cabinet, stool and table with more to come.

What is Eco-design DV Launches Sustainable Design Resource

What is Eco-design? DV Launches Sustainable Design Resource

As we strive to achieve a sustainable and responsible world, two things are certain.

The first is that the way we perceive, use, produce and dispose of what we consume is paramount.

The second is that designers have a leading role in influencing change.

Design Victoria is sowing the seeds to sustainable design with What is Eco-design? - a practical, online How to Kit for industrial, graphic, fashion and textile designers.

Developed by Design Victoria, What is Eco-design? was officially launched at DesignEX - D4S Design for Sustainability.

What is Eco-design? provides solid grounding in eco-design principles and practice, making it the ideal starting place for designers interested in exploring and practising environmentally sustainable design.

Design Victoria engaged Centre for Design at RMIT University and consulted WSP Environmental and leading industry experts in the development of the kit.

"Eco-design delivers professional outcomes with a reduced impact on the environment.

It considers and addresses potential environmental impacts throughout the design process, without compromising functionality, aesthetics, quality, reliability or unnecessarily increasing costs," said Michele Azzopardi, Director, Design Victoria.

What is Eco-design? inspires and empowers designers to work towards more sustainable design practices.
