Motorola Receives Favorable Patent Infringement Judgment in China

Motorola Receives Favorable Patent Infringement Judgment in China

Motorola announced that in 2007 it filed a lawsuit against a Chinese company known as Guangzhou Weierwei Electronic Science and Technology Co. Ltd. (Weirwei).

The lawsuit related to the Chinese Company's two-way radio model number VEV3188 that was claimed to fall within the scope of a Motorola Chinese Design Patent.

In a ruling last December, the First Intermediate People's Court of Beijing (the court in the first instance) determined that the VEV 3188 two-way radio infringed Motorola's Design Patent.

Weierwei was therefore ordered to cease the manufacture and sales of VEV 3188 two-way radios and to financially compensate Motorola.

"We are very pleased that the First Intermediate People's Court of Beijing recognizes the importance of intellectual property protection and has ruled in Motorola's favor," said Jonathan P. Meyer, Motorola senior vice president for Intellectual Property Law.

"Motorola invests extensive human and financial resources to bring compelling designs to market, and the company will remain vigilant in protecting the value of this investment".

Studio Jan Habraken

Studio Jan Habraken

Dutch designer Jan Habraken starts his own studio in New York.

New York became worth traveling to from the Netherlands when Jan Habraken came to set up an office for his studio in 2007.

Before arriving in New York, Habraken was a partner at the successful multidisciplinary design studio WATdesign.

"New York is a totally unique experience," he says. "Being here, you have so many new ideas to explore.

And being surrounded by such a diverse group of creative people really challenges you to push things further. You can't take anything for granted.

The competition is tough."

Jan Habraken opened his studio under his own name and hasn't looked back.

In New York, the opportunity for his work and him to flourish is plenty.

Already he has garnered the attention of Target, Kikkerland and Areaware.

His work explores the combination of massmarket and couture, refraining from the modish method where designers cover objects with a form of decoration.

Works such as mirror-mirro and birdhouse show Habraken's ingenuity and flair for seeing the obvious solution.

Habraken remains more interested in design language than in questions of style.

Dining Living Trends 2008

Dining & Living Trends 2008

The consumer goods industry with the sectors tableware, kitchen and household is a highly competitive and fast moving industry.

Here design is a fundamental economic instrument.

Products have been exhausted in terms of function; therefore design is indispensable for differentiation in the global market.

In order to sell good design, a clever communication of the design concept is essential.

Due to the economic globalisation individual products and product statements are changing; new forms are evolving for new life situations.

In the field of tableware the breaking up of the classic order continues further.

Over the last years globalisation has completely changed the form of eating, communicating and activities at the table - if it still is the table.

This development is met with constantly new responses from the industry.

From a classic western manufacturing view products are designed for international dishes, which results in further differentiation and specialisation for individual dishes and drinks.

Geometrical forms continue to dominate the field of classic china.

However, these disappear the deeper you enter the field of the "globalised" form of tableware described above.

Here the form of china becomes more open and overall more organic.

In the realm of colours a spectrum from lemon yellow to apple green dominates.

The Collabor8 Project

The Collabor8 Project

The Omnium Research Group at the College of Fine Arts announced "The Collabor8 Project" (C8).

Collabor8 is an eight-week long fully online education non-profit initiative that aims to establish a basis for collaborative online art and design projects between universities in Australia and China.

Collabor8 is about creating awareness about the importance of cross cultural design practice and sustainability in design.

It will do this by challenging students to work together to design graphics for contemporary, environmentally friendly and sustainable ceramics, textiles, products and environments.

Design students from Australia and China will join forces for eight weeks, with project convenors, teachers and special guests worldwide, to work collaboratively within a fully online learning environment.

Participants will form valuable connections with colleagues in Australia and China, receiving regular feedback and support from peers, teachers and established professionals, using the Internet as their sole communication tool.

Collabor8 will consist of online lectures, discussions and forums for design students to discuss their ideas and produce design concepts and viable design solutions.
