Label Tuyomyo by Emeco with Gehry A Collaboration in Support of Hereditary Disease Research

Tuyomyo by Emeco with Gehry: A Collaboration in Support of Hereditary Disease Research

Emeco and renowned architect Frank Gehry have collaborated once again, this time in the development a one-of-a-kind large scale bench which will be presented during the Salone del Mobile in Milan, April 22 - 27 2009.

Named Tuyomyo, this is the second time Emeco and Gehry have cooperated on a project, the first being the creation of the all-aluminum Superlight chair launched at the Salone in 2004 and recently accepted into the Museum of Modern Art's permanent design collection.

The new bench will be auctioned in May, proceeds of which will fund the Leslie Gehry Brenner Award of the Hereditary Disease Foundation (HDF).

Frank Gehry's mandate was simple, "The form has to be free and light.

It must be structural, and at the same time poetic.

And a little dangerous."

Using 80% recycled aluminum components and aircraft manufacturing technology, as well as hand craftsmanship - this exclusive Tuyomyo bench further reinforces Gehry's intuitive design vision and Emeco's expertise in crafting aluminum.

Gehry developed ideas for the bench during the time he worked on the Superlight chair for Emeco in 2004.

What started as a sketching of ideas has become a conceptual project for the company and one that will raise funds and awareness for HDF.

Robert Burkle Receives Two Design Awards

Robert Burkle Receives Two Design Awards

Germany-based Robert Burkle GmbH announced that it has recently been awarded the Red Dot Design Award and the Good Design Award for the Ypsator, a multi-opening laminator for manufacturing solar modules.

The product, which features a bright yellow covering, was designed by industrial designer Jurgen R. Schmid.

The Good Design jury also recognized the sustainability, creativity, brand development and ecologically valuable design of the Ypsator, as well as its practical factors (e.g., accessibility, packing and material) when presenting the award.

"Piece by piece, the industrial machine is exceptional as regards the weight, size, dimension and comprehensive design," the jury stated.

In addition, at the end of 2008, the Ypsator won the 2009 iF Award from Design Center Hanover.

Bauhaus 1919-1933 Workshops for Modernity

Bauhaus 1919-1933: Workshops for Modernity

The Museum of Modern Art presents Bauhaus 1919-1933: Workshops for Modernity, a major retrospective presented in collaboration with a consortium of the three Bauhaus collections in Germany (Bauhaus-Archiv Berlin, Stiftung Bauhaus Dessau, and Klassik Stiftung Weimar) from November 8, 2009, to January 25, 2010.

This exhibition is the first comprehensive treatment by MoMA of the Bauhaus since 1938.

That influential exhibition 70 years ago was organized by the school's founder and first director, Walter Gropius, and designed by former Bauhaus student and instructor, Herbert Bayer, the graphic designer.

For many years, its catalogue was the vehicle by which Americans learned about the Bauhaus.

MoMA's second major Bauhaus exhibition will offer a critical revision of the 1938 exhibition, reflecting a new generation of research and perspectives on that influential school, at the same time as presenting newly rediscovered Bauhaus objects and ones rarely seen outside Germany.

Bauhaus 1919-1933: Workshops for Modernity will celebrate the 90th anniversary of the foundation of the Bauhaus in Weimar as well as the 80th anniversary of the founding of The Museum of Modern Art, which was inspired by founding director's Alfred Barr's visits to Dessau in the years before the Museum opened its doors.

One Good Chair 2009 Design Competition Fit Right Here

One Good Chair 2009 Design Competition: Fit Right Here

When people consider the Adirondack chair or Charleston's joggling bench, specific places like upstate New York or the Carolinas come to mind.

Now designers will have the chance to create a chair that's expressive of their own favorite environment.

Due to the overwhelming success of the inaugural One Good Chair event last July, competition organizers are approaching leading manufacturers to fabricate a prototype of each of the finalists' designs.

These models will be exhibited at the upcoming Las Vegas Market, September 14 - 17.

Designers around the world are being called to action to create an iconic "eco-chair" in the second One Good Chair design competition.

Susan Inglis, executive director for the Sustainable Furnishings Council, called One Good Chair an inspirational event.

"Not only is it challenging and provocative, but One Good Chair shows designers are designing for the way we live today.

They're creating pieces that are beautiful and functional, but also putting into practice what's best for the planet and life as we know it.

It's about fit."

European Design Since 1985 Shaping the New Century

European Design Since 1985: Shaping the New Century

This authoritative and groundbreaking publication, written by three internationally renowned design historians, is the first major critical assessment of European design from the last two decades.

Beginning with an incisive examination of the complex forces social, political, economic and cultural that have helped to shape European design since the Second World War, and drawing on the work of a wide range of both established and emerging designers, European Design Since 1985 looks in detail at the most important conceptual and aesthetic movements to have emerged since the mid-1980s.

The result is a masterful and sumptuously illustrated book that cannot fail to have a significant impact on the study of design for years to come.
