Label Braithwaite Wallets Allows Others to Steal Designs

Braithwaite Wallets Allows Others to Steal Designs

Braithwaite Wallets is taking their proprietary, eye-catching designs from local Canadian artists and sharing them with the world through Creative Commons.

Braithwaite made the decision after founder Connor Ferster spotted a comment on a product review on BoingBoing.

"I can't wait for someone to completely steal the design and make it for less," wrote a commentator.

Instead of being offended, Ferster realized an opportunity to change the wallet business.

"We have no problem with another company stealing our ideas," he said.

"If this prompts other wallet companies to wake up and realize that they've been doing the same thing over and over again since the 1950s, then we still succeed.

"Men have such a strong relationship with their wallets that it pains me to think that every man is just carrying a variation of one unoriginal wallet design."

Creative Commons is a non-profit corporation that provides free copyright licenses allowing creators to freely share their work, royalty free, while still retaining authorship credit.

Ferster says he's not concerned that sharing his unique designs will hurt the company that has attracted clients from as far away as Australia, Turkey and Ireland since its March 2008 launch.

"A large part of what makes our wallets special is the craftsmanship, materials, and the execution; it's not just the design."

Recycled PlayStations Have Front-Row Seat in Reee Chair Design

Recycled PlayStations Have Front-Row Seat in Reee Chair Design

Game consoles have a shelf life of about a year or two, given the public's insatiable hunger for state-of-the-art electronics.

Yet, rather than let the discarded units pile up in some landfill somewhere, a small UK-based sustainable design consultancy has established a materials source and created a manufacturable design that transforms unwanted Sony PlayStations into sleek, ergonomic chairs.

The Reee chair from Pli Design Ltd.

got its start on a small scale when Pli Designs was engineering a sustainable chair for the Eden Project, a massive greenhouse and environmental center in Cornwall, England.

The center wanted to create a closed loop recycling system that would transform recycled plastic cups used in its restaurants and cafes into seating that could be deployed in the same venues.

Pli delivered 50 chairs using Eden's own plastic materials, and quickly realized it was on to something that could be produced on a much broader scale.

The Mobile Phone Security Challenge

The Mobile Phone Security Challenge

Today sees the launch of a national search for designers in UK to develop new ways of securing mobile phones against thieves and fraudsters, as research shows that 80% of phones contain data which can be used by criminals to access bank accounts, steal identity, or sell on personal data.

The Mobile Phone Security Challenge is offering a total of £400,000 to designers and technology experts to come up with new ways of securing handsets, the data they contain, and their future use as electronic "wallets" when m-commerce technology is introduced in the UK.

The Challenge is part of Design out Crime, an initiative from the Home Office Design & Technology Alliance Against Crime and the Design Council.

The Mobile Phone Security Challenge is supported by the Technology Strategy Board.

Applicants will submit a tender outlining how they will approach the challenge and identifying any relevant experience they may have.

Once selected by a panel of experts, the teams will be allocated money for research and development from the £400,000 fund, and spend six months developing designs and working prototypes.

The deadline for applications is Friday 22nd May. Short-listed applicants will present to the expert panel on Friday 27th June, and the four finalists will be announced on Monday 29th June.

The Premsela Design Forum on Repairing

The Premsela Design Forum on Repairing

Recycling is a contemporary code word people often use when talking about responsible, conscious production.

At its Milan design forum on Wednesday 22 April, Premsela, Dutch Platform for Design and Fashion, will focus attention on an all-but-forgotten alternative path to reuse: repairing broken and damaged items.

Renowned speakers including Piet Hein Eek (designer), Corinne Poux- Bernard (Director of Innovations, Hermès), Satyendra Pakhale (cultural nomad) and Joanna van der Zanden (Artistic Director, Platform21), led by moderator Marco Bevolo (independent author), will share their views on the value of repair in the context of the global economic crisis.

The Premsela Design Forum will be introduced by the Dutch Minister of Culture, Ronald Plasterk.

Repairing is environmentally friendly, but it also changes the relationship between object and user from superficial to enduring and unique.

To repair is to restore and renew. When a missing or broken part is replaced, a product's character can change radically.

Countless repair manuals and links to repair sites can be found on Planet Green and YouTube.

At the Premsela Design Forum, the point of departure will be the cultural and social aspects of repair.
