Boeing Plans Big Design ChangesBoeing announced on Thursday that its proposed new aircraft, the 7E7, would be the first commercial jet to have a majority of the primary structure, including the wing and fuselage, made of composites.
Boeing said that after months of intensive analysis it had chosen a graphite combined with a toughened epoxy resin as the main composite. The wings would also include composites combining titanium and graphite.
The technology shift could prove a significant blow to the world aluminum industry. In the context of the whole aluminum industry aerospace remains a relatively small user, but it is a high-specification, high-margin part of the market.
