Design Blast: International Design ConferenceThe word "blast", meaning "shock wave" or "detonation", is also a slang word for having a fantastic time.
With the title Design Blast, the University of Arts and Design in Karlsruhe is staging a one-day conference with the aim of making entertaining, provocative and promising design trends visible.
Altogether six young speakers who, in their mid-thirties stand at the beginning of their careers, will show what new directions and trends can be expected in the future.
In his video Alarm Dance, the Briton Daniel Eatock, will present dance performances to the irritating sound of car alarms.
The Italian Elio Caccavale will show what possibilities biotechnology offers for design.
Also contributing will be the German graphic designers Mario Lombardo and Jan Wilker, who lives in New York, as well as the British product designer Richard Sweeny and designer Daniël van der Velden from the Netherlands.
The conference is curated by Petra Schmidt, who works as a freelance writer and design consultant in Frankfurt.
Petra Schmidt studied theater, film and media sciences and was editor-in-chief of the magazine "form" from 1999 to 2007.
This visionary conference, which will take place on May 23, 2008, in the atrium of the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design, is admission free for visitors, but space is limited.
