Science and Engineering Mimicking Natural DesignsFifteen years ago, an economics major looked through a microscope at diatoms, a type of algae, and was blown away by the beauty of design.
Over hundreds of millions of years, these organisms have evolved elegant solutions to challenges such as protection, movement, and reducing drag.
The most famous product mimicking natural designs is velcro, designed by a Swiss scientist after he picked burrs from his dog and looked at them under the microscope.
While velcro is useful, the point of the article is that some biomimicks could be environmentally friendly.
For example, many animals emit light and do so with little energy loss, compared to the highly inefficient incandescent bulb.
