Audi Young Designer of the Year AwardPeter Kirkland, a student from Dalriada Grammar School at Ballymoney, has won the Isaac Agnew Audi Regional Final of the Audi Young Designer of the Year Award.
The 18-year-old from Coleraine came up with a "digital compass clinometer" project that was judged to be the most innovative and challenging design on show.
He was up against 24 Technology and Design students from throughout Northern Ireland, studying either AS or A Level design, BTEC or Advanced GNVQ in Technology or Textiles.
This annual award was hosted this year by Isaac Agnew Audi at the Ulster Museum in Belfast, an appropriate venue where the beauty of man-made design contrasted with the beautiful natural surroundings of Botanic Gardens.
Richard Eakin, of Isaac Agnew Audi, said: "It is extremely encouraging to see the level of commitment and quality shown by local students. As a business we are delighted to be able to support our local education system in this way."
Peter received a prize of £200 and a trip to the Audi factory in Germany. Along with the successful students from a further 19 regional finals throughout the UK, he qualifies for a place in the national final at Gateshead, in September.
The runners-up were Banbridge Academy student Mark Alexander, and Adam Cartlidge, a student at Grosvenor Grammar School, Belfast.
The ultimate Audi Design Foundation "National Young Designer of the Year" will receive a prize of £10,000 towards university fees, a bursary of £500 per annum whilst studying at university plus paid work experience.
