Parsons Students Mix Social Science, Technology and DesignShirts that measure affection, shoes that prevent faux pas, bikes that are political tools. All these high tech concepts were on display at the annual exhibit by the Parsons School of Design and Technology Department.
"These students are learning to be technologists, but at the same time they're learning about design concepts," Colleen Macklin of Parsons School of Design said. "What ends up happening is the design concepts and fundamentals they're learning help bridge the technology to the user or audience."
The "Closer" project bridges relationships through technology, in spite of technology.
"It's based on the idea -- nowadays we're on cell phones, using all these things about being far apart -- and my project brings people close together," Parsons student Alison Lewis said. "It works based on some sensors I made by hand and they're sewn together though conductive fabrics and textiles. While being able to be hugged it fills up like gasoline. So if I hug on it and hold on it, it'll fill up."
