Glass is Breaking the Design Mold All Over the HouseSeeking a fresh look in your home? Try a touch of glass.
A curved glass kitchen counter, cast for a textured finish on one side, turns what would have been a prosaic breakfast bar into something special.
Glass painted on the underside - a technique called backpainting - creates stunning sink basins.
Sparkling glass tiles mixed with ceramic and stone tiles dress up a bathroom.
Glass dividers bring light into a room but can be treated to allow for privacy.
"Glass gives a wonderful look of depth instead of flatness," said artist Rene Culler of Rene Culler Glass in Cleveland. "There are so many places to use it, and so many ways it can be treated, that it can really make your home unique."
Homeowners are discovering the versatility of glass. It can be shaped, painted and embellished in all sorts of ways.
Backpainting - either simple solids or elaborate designs - and cast glass - which has texture and shape - are two of the most popular treatments of glass, said Billy Klausner, president of Crystal Illusions, a custom glass shop in Bedford Heights.
"Before, you'd think of flamingos etched on shower doors when you'd think of decorating glass," Culler said. Now, there's so much more available.
