BMW Win Design AwardThe BMW Group has won Gold in the Industrial Design Society of America's 2004 IDEA (International Design Excellence Awards). This time it is for the R1200 GS and marks a repeat performance for the BMW Group's design team.
In 2003, the BMW Group received several awards from the Industrial Design Society of America (IDSA) including Gold awards for the MINI; Gold and Bronze awards for DesignworksUSA; and a Bronze for BMW Motorcycles.
The R1200 GS was recognised for its lean, distinctive styling - typified by the curved, bird-like beak and angular, jutting cylinders. The R1200 GS is over 30 kilograms lighter than its predecessor (the R1150 GS) and features a more powerful 100 bhp engine. The engine is also eight percent more fuel-efficient and incorporates a revised twin-spark ignition system capable of alternating ignition timing to improve driveability, pollution control and fuel economy.
"We are thrilled that the R1200 GS has won a gold medal from the IDSA, one of the most prestigious design organisations in the US," said David Robb, head of the BMW Motorrad AG Motorcycle Design Studio. "At BMW, our design strategy is to emphasise not only the uniqueness of our technical and engineering package, but also the lines, personality and, of course, functionality of our motorcycles, which make them such a pleasure to ride."
