New iMac G5 Macintosh Design

New iMac G5 Macintosh Design

New iMac G5 Macintosh may be the first desktop computer that doesn't need a desktop: you can hang the thing on a wall and operate it using wireless keyboard and mouse.

The set-up is about 5cm thick. Apple says it is the world's thinnest desktop computer.

In normal use, the latest G5 sits on a sleek aluminium foot and occupies very little desktop space.

It can be detached and wall-mounted using the VESA industry standard.

Apple will offer a VESA mount adapter kit later this year, but others should also be available.

"With the entire system, including a gorgeous 17in or 20in display, just 2in thin, a lot of people will be wondering where did the computer go?" quipped Phil Schiller, Apple's senior worldwide marketing vice-president, at last week's launch.

The new iMac, aimed at the consumer and home office market, replaces the hemispherical lampstand iMac G4 abandoned earlier this year after disappointing sales.

It's the first consumer machine to use the high-performance 32/64-bit G5 microprocessor that Apple puts in its PowerMac desktops for the professional market.
