Concern Over Cheap Low-end Products from China Flooding Global MarketsWhile the economic downturn in a number of Western countries and the low numbers of buyers dampened the mood of many Asian exhibitors, including some Malaysians, at the Frankfurt consumer goods’ show called “Tendence Lifestyle” from August 27 to 31, they were privately also expressing concern over the wide range of cheap low-end consumer products from China flooding the global markets.
“China has clearly the edge over other Asian suppliers, including Malaysians, because of its low production and labour costs; however, Malaysians and other traditional Asian suppliers should concentrate on upper-end products and, particularly, cater to the niche markets,” Rainer Beine, a Salzburg based Austrian buyer who sources a variety of products from a number of Asian countries, including Malaysia, told Bernama.
Arif Merchant, president of Sana Enterprises of Arnheim, California was also visiting the stands of Asian exhibitors to identify suitable household products which he sells to major television channels and mail order companies.
Merchant, an American citizen of Pakistani origin, cautioned that China’s supplies were not always up to the desired standard.
