Sikorsky Aircraft Mulls Indiana Sites for Design CenterHelicopter manufacturer Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. is considering Evansville and other Indiana locations as possible sites for two design centers, a report Wednesday said.
Company representatives met with Evansville-area officials recently to discuss the project and intend to decide on a location by the end of the month, Jerry Cain, dean of science and engineering at the University of Southern Indiana, told the Evansville Courier & Press.
The company also is looking at as many as three other locations in Indiana and several in other states, Cain said.
One reason Sikorsky was attracted to Evansville is its two engineering schools, one at Southern Indiana and the other at the University of Evansville, Cain said.
"They knew what they wanted, and they told us flat out they weren't here by accident, that they had done their homework," he said.
Each center would design aircraft and employ about 400 people, primarily engineers and other professionals, Cain said.
The Associated Press left a telephone message with a Sikorsky spokesman seeking comment on the report.
Stratford, Conn.-based Sikorsky, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp., makes the Army's Black Hawk series and the Navy's Sea Hawk series of military helicopters and several commercial models.
