Taiwan Bikemakers Reach for New Plateau"The ability to keep on doing research and development on high-end bikes has contributed greatly to the high performance of our products," said Tony Lo, general manager of Giant Manufacturing Co., Ltd. He said that 27 athletes from 13 countries competed on Giant bikes in this year's Olympics, and the bikes used by the Olympic medalists sponsored by his company employed high-strength carbon-fiber frames weighing a mere 800 grams each.
Lo said that his company employs more than 150 designers and technicians in its research and development (R&D) centers in Taiwan, Europe, the United States and China, allocating 2 percent of the company's overall yearly expenditures for R&D. Each center is responsible for research on the specific needs of their respective regional markets. "Giant has also been working on a plan to build a platform for our headquarters, overseas R&D centers and clients to communicate more easily and enhance the effectiveness of our R&D," he added.
Producing 5 million bikes of various sorts annually and mainly targeting markets in the United States, Europe, Japan, Australia and China, Giant expects to generate an estimated revenue of US$590 million this year.
