HP Accused of Stealing Computer DesignHewlett Packard (HP) has come under suspicion for basing its Presario B3800 notebook computer on a cloned design.
Sotec Computer Korea on Wednesday claimed the B3800, which hit the nation’s shops last week, is a copycat of its own AP5140CL model, which debuted in Japan last December and here in March.
'The two notebook computers are basically the same model even at a glance. Without sharing the same mold, HP could not provide such a similar product,' argued Daniel Kim, in charge of Sotec Computer Korea’s marketing team.
He insisted both models are identical in the keyboard design and location of the power switch as well as designs and arrangements of several sockets.
'The cloning dented our corporate image and caused substantial damages. If HP Korea doesn’t come out with appropriate follow-up measures, we will bring it to court,' Kim added.
In response, HP Korea flatly downplayed the claim, saying the B3800 and AP5140CL are clearly distinct notebooks both in design, applications and capacity.
'We already reported this case to our Asia-Pacific headquarter in Singapore yesterday (Tuesday) and received a preliminary reply that nothing is wrong with B3800 sales here,' an HP Korea official said.
Sotec pins its blame on Arima, the Taiwan-based computer maker, which manufactured both AP5140CL and Presario B3800 m
