Karim Rashid: Obsessed with DesignHe is an award-winning industrial designer who has worked with the best in the fashion and lifestyle industry, from Issey Miyake to Giorgio Armani. He has won numerous awards including the Brooklyn Museum of Art Designer of the Year 1998 and I.D. Magazine’s Annual Design Review Awards 2002. His work has been exhibited in art museums and galleries all over the world, from the Museum of Modern Art in New York to the Groningen Museum in Holland.
Just who is the eccentric Karim Rashid, who proclaims he does not follow trends, but starts them?
Born in Cairo in 1960, the multi-lingual Karim was raised in England and Canada. He set up his own studio in New York in 1993. As an industrial designer, Karim is involved in the creative process of almost everything from buildings, interiors, fashion, furniture, art, music to film.
“I never specialise in any field. I think the world is borderless and I navigate between all professions,” ; he said.
He has been called “the poet of plastic” for his unconventional, artistic use of the material in his designs. The cutting-edge Karim has made a name for himself among contemporary art and design lovers. In 2003, he ventured into the fragrance industry by designing the bottle for the men’s fragrance Echo Davidoff.
