Volvo YCC: Your Concept Car: All Female Design ConceptThe first concept car to be developed by an all-women team went on display in London yesterday.
From Swedish car company Volvo, the concept is known as a YCC (Your Concept Car).
It has gull wing doors for easier access and improved visibility and a personalised interior with inter-changeable carpets and seating.
The all-women team includes deputy technical project manager Lena Ekelund, who has been with Volvo since 1986 and exterior designer Anna Rosen.
The car was being shown off at the Business Design Centre in Islington, north London.
The display co-incides with the publication of research from Volvo which showed that women influence 80% of car purchases.
Also, in the premium car segment Volvo operates in, female customers have increased by 50% in the past five years. Research shows that these women are the most demanding car buyers, and they tend to be younger than their male car buying counterparts.
Women make up 45% of the total workforce in the UK. However, within the automotive industry this figure tends to be lower, with retail and distribution disciplines around 30% and within the manufacturing sector it is even lower - at just 8%. By contrast, at Volvo's Torslanda manufacturing site in Sweden, female staff account for 27% of the workforce and 20% of all Volvo employees are female.
