Glass Magic by DesignChris Jenkins removed the glowing glob of glass, affixed to a hollow tube, from a 2,300-degree furnace and went to work on the molten material, alternately spinning it, blowing it and etching it with a caliper.
The heat from the furnace radiated inside the old warehouse in the heart of industrial west Eugene, and Jenkins repeated the process as a growing band of bystanders, standing behind a red velvet rope, watched the mesmerizing work of glass-blowing.
Welcome to Aurora Glass, where old window glass that would otherwise be buried in a landfill is transformed into colorful tiles, bowls, vases, drawer pulls and Christmas ornaments.
"People just love seeing this molten liquid being transformed and shaped and expanded," said Patti Lomont, Aurora Glass' marketing manager. "It's kind of magical. They make it look so easy but it's really hard to do."
Until Christmas, Aurora Glass, a division of the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Lane County, is selling its 2004 glass ornaments, hand-stamped with a snowflake design. The ornaments are sold mostly wholesale - a hospital in Eureka, Calif., bought 1,800 - but also available at the glass foundry's showroom, 2345 W. Broadway, through Christmas. They also have tables full of seconds sold at bargain prices.
