Herman Miller: The Purpose of DesignGood design can wow customers, cultivate image and, most important to author John Berry, solve problems.
Berry's new book, "Herman Miller: The Purpose of Design," provides a glimpse into the design world of the Zeeland-based furniture maker.
Berry not only outlines famous Herman Miller/designer relationships with icons such as Charles and Ray Eames, Gilbert Rohde and George Nelson, he looks at the problems designers solved.
Berry knows his material. The Holland resident worked for Herman Miller for 16 years as vice president of corporate communications, which included time as a liaison with many of the company's famous stable of designers. Before that, he worked for the Smith Group in Detroit.
The idea for the book sprouted after researching a speech he was giving on the work of Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson.
"I realized there really was nothing out there to tie the philosophy of Herman Miller to the problem-solving focus of design," said Berry, who no longer works for Herman Miller.
He spoke to Marg Mojzak, senior manager of Herman Miller for the Home about the project. Then, he went to see Rizzoli, a New York-based book publisher.
