Mitsubishi's New Eclipse Design Is IntroducedMitsubishi Motors showed off a new design for its flagship vehicle on Wednesday morning.
Developers, town of Normal officials and plant workers all applauded the 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse.
It's the fourth generation of the sport coupe to be produced at the Normal plant.
Officials hope it will take the company to higher employment levels.
Developers say the Eclipse should contend well with its number one competitor the Ford Mustang.
That's because the car offers more power with 236 horsepower in the V-6 and improved safety features.
This includes side curtain airbags and a weight-sensitive passenger air bag.
Officials hope the new style can energize the automaker.
Mitsubishi Spokesman Dan Irvin said, "There is so much new product. If you go to the Chicago Auto Show every automaker has so much new product. If you don't have fresh, exciting product every three or four years, you're not even going to be able to play in the game."
Dick Rinehimer, Mitsubishi product engineer, said, "The dynamic strength of this product in terms of ride and handling is a bigger platform in terms of length, width and size. Width obviously gives it a strong stance."
Developers say the Eclipse was designed mainly for the North American market.
Officials say the size increases in the car won't help with sales in Europe bec
