Rinspeed's Latest Design UnveiledEvery February, car journalists the world over wait with baited breath for the latest Rinspeed show machine as the Geneva Salon approaches, and as usual, the Swiss designers have transcended the normal with their latest offering.
"The driver and not the technology should be the focal point of a car," says the head of Rinspeed, Frank Rinderknecht, 49, summing up the background to his latest "Senso" concept car.
The Senso is due to be presented by the off-the-wall Swiss automotive design-and-solutio ns specialist, Rinspeed, and Bayer MaterialScience at the Geneva Motor Show this week.
Johannes Seesing, who specialises in automotive applications at Bayer, says, "We are carrying out research on the car of tomorrow. The Senso is an example of unconventional ideas and applied lateral thinking."
He can say that again. The three- seater - which looks not dissimilar to the Giugiaro-designed BMW Aztec of the early '90s - runs on environmentally friendly natural gas and senses the driver by measuring his (or her) biometric data. Once sensed, the driver then has what Rinspeed calls a "positive effect exerted upon them", with the help of patterns, colours, music and fragrances.
