Starck Raving About EverythingFrom see-through chairs to chic hotels, Philippe Starck's imagination knows no bounds. But, he tells Rose Shepherd, there is a method to his madness.
Philippe Starck is surely the most prolific designer in all history and after five minutes in his company you see why.
His brain brims and boils with big ideas, ethical and existential posers, airy notions, flights of fantasy. At times, the word "bonkers" comes to mind, but he is nothing if not entertaining.
"First - lunch," he announces, taking from his fridge a leathery-looking fruit and sucking on it hungrily. It is a passion fruit, he says: "The highest in vitamin C."
Research later suggests this isn't true (papaya, guava, kiwi fruit, even strawberries have more) but Starck is a man who deals in superlatives - and passion. Food is one such passion and plays a huge role in his life.
He is also a mass of contradictions. He will tell you one minute that he lives like a monk: "I wake up at six, I am alone here designing, I don't eat, at night I go to the gym, I make my soup, I go to bed."
Next minute he comes across as a gregarious sensualist, boasting: "I cook well. I'm not a grand chef, but I can make a very good dinner for 30 people in 45 minutes, having fun." Yet depression is a condition with which he is all too familiar.
