Malaysian Furniture Manufacturers Urged To Be TrendsetterMalaysian furniture manufacturers are urged to play the role of the trendsetter or price leader instead of competing in the price war in order to excel in the global arena.
"Competition is one big thing we must face and the only way to face it is to come out with our own quality design that is acceptable to the buyers," said Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui.
He acknowledged that to promote original design manufacturing (ODM) and original brand name (OBM) there were issues that needed to be to be tackled such as the hassle to register intellectual property rights.
If it is difficult to get intellectual property rights registered, it would encourage the manufacturers to copy the design of others, he said at a press conference after delivering a speech at the "3rd National Furniture Seminar: The New Malaysian Approach For the American Market", Monday.
"The process must be smoothened and encouraged," he said, adding that about 80 percent of Malaysian furniture export had been categorised for low end market mostly under Original Equipment Manufacturing (OEM), meaning that they manufacture the designs of the buyers.
Chin also urged manufacturers to be brave enough to hold to the prices that they had set and not to lower the prices just because they wanted to secure an order.
