Bombay Sapphire Stretch: Tom Dixon Unveils the UK's Longest BenchTom Dixon, one of the UK's leading designers and Creative London Luminary, in collaboration with Bombay Sapphire, completes the UK's longest bench (75m), titled the Bombay Sapphire Stretch, on 19 September.
The bench has been built in-situ in Trafalgar Square, using humble blue rubber bands (12,000 bands) and the Kee Klamp system! Tom's latest chair design will also be part of an installation in the Trafalgar Hotel opposite the Square.
The bench snakes around the square with occasional clusters of tables and chairs which will enable the public to use it for their own enjoyment.
The Bombay Sapphire Stretch has been created as part of the launch of Tom Dixon's latest design, the new Rubber Band Chair, during the London Design Festival (15-30 September 2005).
The chair and bench involve blue rubber bands being stretched to create seating.
Since being awarded an OBE for his services to British design in 2000, Tom Dixon has achieved world recognition for his extraordinary design vision.
Tom continues to run his prestigious furniture and product design label whilst remaining the creative director for Habitat.
