Mix by Reddig DesignPrototype stations constructed using 50 percent standard product and 50 percent new development for an experiment, testing whether the two primary movements in today's work place – knowledge - worker attraction / retention, and cost cutting by reducing the square footage per person – needed to be met at the other's expense.
A big concern in the concept phase was improving the inhabitant's well being in a greatly reduced footprint.
Early models indicated a counter-intuitive direction; it appeared that more enclosure, rather than less, was needed as the spaces became smaller.
The result was a system of simple, tubular frames with fiberglass and mesh inserts that provided the balance between enclosure and exposure – the difference between creating a refuge versus a cell.
The Mix prototypes were shown as part of the 2000 NeoCon Ideation display, and are currently being used in Haworth's corporate headquarters.
