Ford Australia Gets $700m Design BoostFORD Australia will take over the design and engineering responsibility for the Ford group's light commercial vehicle from Mazda Motor Corporation.
The move will generate about $700 million in design and technical fees for the local operation.
Using a Federal Government $12.5 million grant, Ford will build a design and engineering centre at Broadmeadows as part of a light commercial vehicle project known as T6.
The T6 is Ford Australia's most important project. The vehicle will be made in three or four countries and Ford expects to sell about 400,000 a year in more than 100 markets.
Ford has also promised to design an all-new Falcon and Territory range, in return for a further $40 million government assistance.
The new models will be designed with left-hand drive (LHD) capability to open up export markets, although Ford president Tom Gorman said yesterday that the new Falcon project, known as E8, had not received formal head office approval for domestic manufacture, let alone export.
