Red Dot Award - Communication Design 2007

Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2007

The red dot award: communication design is starting a new round. Designers, advertising agencies, and firms producing communication design pieces from around the world are invited starting now to submit their work to the competition and to expose their talents to international comparison. With over 6,000 submissions last year alone, the red dot design award is a top design competition and one of the biggest worldwide. Products and works that stand out in the competition will then be presented to the public for one year in the red dot design museum. Registrations can be made online at www.red-dot.de/registration. The registration deadline is 22 June 2007.

Never before has the world been as fast-paced as it is today, and never before has it been so easy to gain access to information from around the globe and to communicate. At the same time, communication has never been as complex: refrigerators, navigational devices, play stations and cell phones communicate with us as much as televisions or radios do. Virtual worlds are created with virtual newspaper layouts, the "real" book market flaunts a myriad of brightly coloured covers, and when we search on the world wide web, a vast number of advertising pop-ups compete for our attention. Communication is everywhere.

This year again we are embarking on the search for particularly accomplished work from the world of communication design. Experienced and, above all, independent jurors will gather in July in the red dot design museum to scrutinise the newest work, to select the best items, and to distinguish them with the "red dot" quality label. Members of this year's jury include:

Christoph Mecke, INTERONE Hamburg, Tyron Montgomery, Augenreiz, Jean Jacques Schaffner, Schaffner & Conzelmann, Switzerland and Holger Windfuhr, Art Director of the magazine Wirtschaftswoche

Strengthening the Discipline Packaging Design
This year, for the first time, the red dot awards will have a separate jury for packaging design. Packaging is subject to a wide range of requirements and, given the vast array of products in supermarkets and warehouses, it is often a deciding factor in consumers' buying decisions. However, as it cannot be neatly categorised as either graphic design or product design it seems to have fallen through the cracks at the red dot award. Together with the Pan European Brand Design Association (PDA), we thus wish to build a profile for this category within our competition. This year's competition will include, for the first time, three appointed jury members who, as specialists in the field, will devote themselves exclusively to the evaluation of packaging.

Awards Ceremony and Special Exhibition
The official awards ceremony will take place in December with guests of honour from business, politics and media as well as many other guests from design and advertising. This ceremony has become a prestigious annual meeting place for the design world, paying tribute to the winners of the red dot design awards in a festive setting that lasts until the wee hours of the morning.

In addition to issuing the awards, the red dot design competition also recognises all award-winning work with a special exhibition that lasts at least weeks and that is open to the public. At the end of the exhibition, works awarded the red dot: grand prix or the red dot: best of the best for highest design quality are kept for one year in the red dot design museum.
