Game Design School Teams Up with Sony and Nintendo

Game Design School Teams Up with Sony and Nintendo

New Zealand computer game development school, Media Design School has signed a deal with both Sony and Nintendo which will provide students access to state-of-the-art, industry-standard game development kits for the Nintendo GameCube and Sony PSP consoles.

Both game development kits have opened up opportunities for Media Design School students.

Not only will students now be able to design games which can be played on both consoles, they will also be increasing their chances of landing desirable game development jobs after they graduate.

Mr Brendan Burns (Media Design School's Game Development Course Leader) is thrilled with the deal and says, "Game studios need developers who can write code or prepare art assets not only for PC, but for fixed hardware consoles like Nintendo's GameCube and Sony's PSP.

In order to meet the needs of these game studios, we are enhancing our game development courses to provide our students with the expertise they require in order to be attractive to the large game development studios."

Nokia and Ikivo Bring Designers and Developers Together

Nokia and Ikivo Bring Designers and Developers Together

Nokia and Ikivo announced the joint creation of a complete tool chain that simplifies and allows efficient collaboration between graphic designers and software engineers in the development of Java applications for mobile devices.

The new tool set integrates Nokia's Platform SDKs for Java, Adobe Illustrator, Ikivo Animator and Sun's NetBeans to enable user interface designers to add their GUI designs directly to an application project and avoid the time-consuming process of "translating" those designs into Java code.

Utilizing Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) to capture visual designs for optimized integration into software development projects, the new solution dramatically improves the productivity of mobile Java development, and reinforces the attractiveness of Java as an environment for creating compelling mobile applications with rich graphics and interactivity.

The new tool set's utilization of SVG, an open standard for describing 2D static and animated vector graphics developed through the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), makes it possible to define a clear division of labor between engineers and graphic designers working on software development projects.

Using the new SVG-enabled tool chain developed by Nokia and Ikivo, graphic designers are free to concentrate on creating useful and exciting user experiences, incorporating designs in the final product without the need to help engineers translate those designs into code.

AIA Americas Favorite Architecture Web Site Wins Prestigious Webby Award

AIA America's Favorite Architecture Web Site Wins Prestigious Webby Award

Out of nearly 10,000 entries, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) won the 2008 People's Voice Webby Award for the America's Favorite Architecture (AFA) website.

The AFA web site was created based on the results of an AIA public poll which asked American's to choose their favorite examples of architecture.

The AFA website continued the public conversation by inviting many more people to share their comments on the importance of architecture in their lives.

The People's Voice Award is notable given the public selects the winner from the list of nominees set by the award judges.

The Webby Awards is the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet.

The Webbys are presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, a 550-member body of leading Web experts, business figures, luminaries, visionaries and creative celebrities.

"The original intent of the America's Favorite Architecture poll was to increase public awareness of the 150 buildings, bridges, monuments, and memorials that represent the best of America's architectural heritage," said AIA Executive Vice President / CEO Christine McEntee said.

"It is a tremendous honor to have won this distinction.

The fact that the public's vote has resulted in this award is proof that the AFA Website has resonated with those interested in learning more about the finest examples of architecture in the country."
