Recycling Kitty Litter on the Go

A cardboard kitty litter package to end cat owners' nightmares has won a Swinburne University student a gold medal in the Southern Cross Package Design Awards.

The $500 award, won by student Tracey Samaha, presented at Peninsula on the Docklands.

Samaha's design takes the fuss out of cleaning up after pets - it forms a tray when opened, has handles for easy transport and is fully recyclable.

"I buy kitty litter often and I always find the thin plastic bags impractical to carry," Samaha said. "I designed a new container for it out of biodegradable cardboard."

Samaha was one of seven students at Swinburne to win a medal at this year's awards.

Other winning entries include a pet food container that doubles as a small kennel, a cardboard bag for cement and a bio-degradable, transparent container for the storage of fresh herbs.
