Neutra VDL House Now Has an iPad App

Plasmatic Concepts recently released an iPad app about the Neutra VDL Studio and Residences (a Richard Neutra Mid-Century Modernist masterpiece located in Los Angeles.) Authors David Hartwell and Sarah Lorenzen have been living in VDL's 1939 Garden House since 2007. This unique position enables them to share their knowledge of this seminal structure from the inside out.

There are many reasons Plasmatic Concepts chose to highlight this particular Neutra project: it was Neutra's own family residence and workplace; it was built in three phases offering insight into the evolution of Neutra's architectural ideas; and it is today the only Neutra residence regularly open to the public.

The Neutra VDL iPad app includes never seen before photography of the house along with photographs of famed architectural photographer Julius Shulman, courtesy of the J. Paul Getty Trust. A biography of Richard Neutra, an interactive historical timeline, rotating 3D models, plans and sections, and information about its design intent, construction techniques, and materiality are some of the features that make this 260 page app (130 pages, 2 orientations) a must have for anyone passionate about this fascinating period in architecture.
