Skullcandy Launches New R&D Flagship in its Park City HQ

Skullcandy has launched a new retail experience in its Park City, Utah Headquarters. Designed in collaboration with Checkland Kindleysides, the flagship offers a one-of-a-kind Skullcandy audio experience.

Progressive yet pragmatic, the store invites the community and early adopters to demo the brand's latest audio innovations. Designed to act as a work-in-progress R&D playground, Skullcandy can test new products and trial different retail displays pre-launch - harnessing feedback directly from customers and passing it directly onto the sound engineers and retail teams who are based upstairs.

"Our creative vision was to invite people into a backstage experience, bringing to life's Skullcandy's 'music you can feel' mantra in a multi-dimensional way," commented Joe Evans, Creative Director Checkland Kindleysides. "The visceral spatial design reflects the independent and irreverent attitude of the brand and its fans."

The space is located in the brand's hometown HQ and is one of only two standalone retail spaces the brand has in the world. Reflective of the brand, this space never stands still, with modular components and partitions that enable testing of different customer journeys and product experiences, future-proofing the space and the brand's retail presence.

Premium yet irreverent, the materiality and spatial design cues lie at the intersection of independent music culture and board sports. The wood used for the product displays is the same wood found in skate ramps while the service desk sits on what resembles three large speakers usually found at a music concert.

Suspended product displays combined with an expressive and insanely-lit campaign canvas as a backdrop, boldly hero the latest product drops and innovations. Designed to facilitate independent self-immersion, a product demo bar lies at the heart of the space ergonomically designed for listeners to feel like a DJ at the decks.

Taking inspiration from the utilitarian details from music and board sports, the product merchandising systems intentionally use subtle design language to create a deep and emotional resonance with true music and board sport enthusiasts. The flagship location also features the full in-line product assortment, limited-edition products from the brand's innovative 12 Moods campaign, as well as select Skullcandy clothing and accessories.
