Mokkō Designs Contemporary Japanese Living Room for Amsterdam Canal House

Mokkō recently designed a central living room for an art collector's eclectic canal house apartment in the city center of Amsterdam. The interior is designed for the client to retreat from the busy streets & his art, books and souvenirs at his home.

Taking a holistic approach, the studio transformed the room into a warm and serene space, using natural materials including French oak, walnut, rice paper, clay plaster and jute. Inspired by Japanese aesthetics, Mokkō limited the interior pieces to a minimum. The style breaks with Western living room standards and focuses on natural materials and the beauty of their imperfections. Big French oak wood beams were used as steps, mirroring the idea of stepping stones seen in Japanese zen gardens.

Other than the soft furnished pieces, every detail of the interior and each piece of furniture and lighting within were designed by Mokkō. The custom pieces were complemented with furniture crafted in Japan.
