Acrylic Materials Make Comeback at Milan Furniture Trade Show

Acrylic Materials Make Comeback at Milan Furniture Trade Show

Natural and organic materials are current trends in furniture design, but in the coming months synthetic materials that were popular in the 1980s are to make a comeback.

At the Milan furniture trade show, transparent pieces of acrylic - reminiscent of furniture popular two decades ago - were on display along with pieces featuring glass and metal.

Opposites rule the designs: the materials were either clear or very heavily tinted.

Ideas from the 1970s also influence the designs in some ways.

There were individual pieces with material casually draped over them, while the material on other pieces had a brash cut with raw edges.

This had nothing to do with backwardness or lack of ideas.

The designers' look back at the 1970s and 1980s is more positive and includes prettier details and more intricate work.

The trade show included some unusual shapes standing opposite less striking pieces that in return exhibited precisely developed fineries, such as a piece of furniture's adjustable height.

The term supernormal was coined to describe these trends at the trade show.

Black White The new 911 Racing and Swarovski Collection

Black & White: The new 911 Racing and Swarovski Collection

Based on the motto Black & White, Porsche Design Driver's Selection presents the elegant 911 Swarovski ladies' collection and the sporty 911 Racing men's collection.

Both collections are aimed at Porsche drivers and Porsche fans who want to enjoy the 911 fascination also when not actually driving the car.

The fusion of classical and elegant design with modern materials is typical of the new ladies' collection embellished with Swarovski crystals.

It was three years ago when Porsche Design Driver's Selection products were finished with the glittering crystals for the first time in order to pay tribute to these special moments in life.

The 911 jewelled watch with Swarovski crystals is the highlight of the current collection: Its crystal-studded, solid stainless steel case and leather strap with 911 pendant in Porsche lettering make this watch an exclusive ladies' accessory to be ideally complemented by the 911 bracelet with Swarovski crystals and the 911 necklace with Swarovski crystals: The high-quality stainless steel bracelet captivates with links in the original Porsche lettering and a 911 pendant with inlaid Swarovski crystals.

Sparkling highlights embellish the black Women's sweater with Swarovski crystals: the Porsche logo on the back of the slightly fitted jumper is set with crystals, other appliques glitter on the elbows.

Design Focus Time is Money So Prototype for Profit

Design Focus: Time is Money, So Prototype for Profit

Rapid prototyping can reduce the number of costly engineering changes made to a mold, cut the time-to-market for a new product, and-with the development of new RP systems and materials-even fill the gap between prototype and low-volume processing.

Developments in rapid prototyping have gotten to the point that firms such as Quickparts Inc. are gaining more notice, and more competition.

As its name implies, Quickparts can supply parts, quickly, using CAD models to form parts via a number of RP methods.

Patrick Hunter, VP of sales and marketing at Quickparts, notes, "The continual evolution of materials has pushed prototyping into the mainstream as a technology.

It allows designers to have greater design freedom: they're not as limited in their design, especially with respect to SLS (Selective Laser Sintering), which many customers are choosing for actual end-use parts."

Industrial Facility Some Recent Projects

Industrial Facility: Some Recent Projects

Industrial Facility is a London-based design office formed by designer Sam Hecht and architect Kim Colin.

With designer Ippei Matsumoto, it has established itself as a significant design office of mass-produced goods.

Industrial Facility takes pleasure in the anonymity of everyday items and applies intellectual rigour, high design values and vision to the most mundane of products such as coffee makers, stationary and kitchen utensils.

This exhibition is an opportunity to see some of Industrial Facility's recent and current projects, and aims to reveal the design motives and functional workings of the practice.

Although based in London, they have designed almost entirely for foreign markets, with little of their projects being seen or consumed in the UK.

Recent commissions include work for Herman Miller, Established & Sons, and Yamaha.

As Creative Advisors to Muji, the practice has designed over 50 items for the Japanese retailer, ranging from furniture to apparel to electronics to food, creating inspiring solutions to everyday commodities.

Several of the newest projects will be on view in the exhibition.

Running in parallel to the exhibition is a selection of almost one hundred items Sam Hecht has amassed over the last fifteen years that cost 'Under a Fiver'.

Drawn from all over the world, the items display everything from astonishing kitsch to the purity of functionalism.

DesignTalks Paper Cuts Through Sustainable Design

DesignTalks Paper Cuts Through Sustainable Design

DesignTalks, the online community and discussion forum for UK design and manufacturing businesses, has released a new whitepaper that cuts through the issues surrounding design and sustainability and delivers clear advice to manufacturers about how design can be used to shape both greener products and more sustainable working practices.

Design and sustainability - how making a difference through design also makes good business sense is the second in a series of DesignTalks whitepapers, and includes expert commentary and examples of companies that have tackled sustainability head-on - and are prospering as a result.

"A key issue is for product designers to be exposed to applied sustainable thinking, and at present this provision is only patchy among the global design curriculum," says Professor Martin Charter of the Centre of Sustainable Design (CfSD).

"Within the UK, design organisations need to take a committed strategic position on sustainability."
