Planet Propaganda's Poster Design Rocks I.D.'s Reviewers

For 18 years, Planet Propaganda's poster designs have gained a reputation among music venues and performers with their two-for-flinching, attention-getting punch. Honoring the captivating work, I.D. Magazine chose Planet's Andre Williams poster for a world tour in the July/August 2007 issue's Annual Design Review.

Planet created the poster with a split-fountain rainbow background, an old-school technique befitting old-school rhythm-and-bluesman Williams, a.k.a. The Black Godfather. The silk-screened poster, deemed "supernaturally cool" by I.D., was one of only 150 designs selected from more than 2,000 separate entries submitted from every part of the globe. The 53rd Annual Design Review grows larger each year and attracts jurors from the highest ranks of the design profession.

Since 1954, I.D.'s Annual Design Review has recognized the best in product, furniture, graphic and environment design, from the iconic to the obscure. Throughout the years, this annual showcase has chronicled the evolution of design, and highlighted its impact on material and visual culture.

Design's intertwinement with music has been equally vital in shaping culture throughout those decades. Since the late '80s, Planet has beckoned fans to Madison's High Noon Saloon and its predecessor, O'Cayz Corral, through hand-wrought screen-printing and raw imagery. Kevin Wade, Planet principal/creative director, is largely responsible for this long-running visual tribute to live music. Under his art direction, Planet posters have summoned the faithful to gigs by such artists as All the Pretty Horses, Califone, Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips, Dick Dale, Forget Cassettes, Frank Black, Th' Legendary Shack*Shakers, The Long Winters, Melvins, Nashville Pussy, Okkervil River, Southern Culture on the Skids, Sparklehorse, and Those Darn Accordions. Wade also composes and produces soundtracks for many of Planet's television and motion graphics projects.
