RIBA Responds to National Policy Planning Framework Announcement

The Royal Institute of British Architects' (RIBA) has responded to the Government's National Policy Planning Framework (NPPF), which was published earlier today.

"The RIBA is very encouraged by the strong emphasis placed on the importance of good design within the new planning framework and its central role in delivering sustainable development," RIBA President Ruth Reed said.

"We are particularly pleased at the recognition within the NPPF of the role of design review, something we have been pushing the Government to include within the framework.

National policy on design has been strong for some time, but too many poor developments continue to slip through the net.

We believe that a strengthened, locally available system of design review, given greater prominence within the planning system, will help improve standards by enabling more rigorous assessment of schemes prior to planning permission being granted. We will be submitting a more detailed response to the consultation."
